Island communities worldwide are on the front lines of climate change and resource challenges. The University of Guam invites islanders and allies from around the globe to chart a path towards a sustainable future at the 15th University of Guam Conference on Island Sustainability (CIS2024).

CIS2024, begins on Monday, April 8, 2023 with pre-conference activities and runs to Saturday, April 13, 2024 at the Hyatt Regency Guam, and will explore how island communities can leverage their unique knowledge, traditions, science and ingenuity to address pressing environmental, social, and economic challenges.

The conference will be co-chaired by President of the University of Guam Anita Borja Enriquez and Governor of Guam Lourdes Leon Guerrero.

“The first Sustainability Conference in 2010 set the foundation for the University of Guam’s path as a leader in promoting research, outreach, and capacity-building in the area of Sustainable Development in the Micronesia region,” said Enriquez. “Today, it continues to be a vital component of our forward-looking vision —- Tulos Mo’na. This year, we strengthen that partnership as the university continues to forge its enduring legacy of sustainability across the region with Micronesia leaders and other strategic partners.”

The theme of this year’s conference is Sustainability Endures and according to UOG Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant director Austin Shelton, it calls for continued dedication to the future of the entire world.

“For 15 years, we confronted challenges, developed innovations, and revealed solutions. Our sustainable actions must endure,” explained Shelton.  “In 2024, we’re celebrating our first 15 years and cast the vision for a sustainable, equitable, and prosperous future we all desire.”

The conference will feature Inspiring keynote and featured speakers, networking opportunities, exhibitions, site visits along with engaging plenary and breakout sessions on a range of topics, including:

– Climate change adaptation and mitigation

– Renewable energy and resource management
